I have the most interesting, funny May Day story to tell you this morning.
Saturday I rose early, 4 AM, since Patrick began his season opening day at the Farmers Market, and I had a huge list of last minute tasks to perform before the big May Day celebration.
I thought to ease the tension, and lighten things up, I'd go on my morning walk. It was a little before 6 Am before I took off down the street. The walk consists of about 2 miles, just so you'll know, not really relevant to the story.
Just to set the tone... I live in an older part of the city, but my walk takes me to a newer area, where new homes sit on smaller lots. Okay, lets's get on with this story...
After I'm about 1/2 mile into the walk and in the newer section of my neighborhood, I notice something big and white sitting statuesque in a well manicured lawn. It began to move, and I was kind of scared, because the white thing was fairly large, I'm guessing at least, 175 pounds or so. I continue to look, and realize it's a huge sheep!
Where's your camera when you need it? Golly Gee!
I found this picture, it's a pretty close example of what the sheep looked like.
I continue to walk, I don't believe I ever stopped, and the large sheep begins to follow me. He/She waits until I get 20 feet or so in front, and then kirclop, kirclop, it runs down the street towards me at full speed ahead. I was scared thinking it was going to charge at me! I was flabbergasted too! I mean come on, a residential neighborhood, no farms within miles, and 6 AM, and gosh this was just unreal.
I continue to walk very fast, and once again, the gigantic sheep waits until I get so far in front of it, and then full speed ahead, kirclump, kirclump, Baa-aaa, Baa-aaa! I turn around and say, STOP, you must quit following me, I'm not Mary! I yell at it like I'm mad, I scold it for following me. This continues for about a mile into the walk. Once I turn, the corner and begin walking the other direction the sheep quietly sits in a new yard just looking at me, and finally stays put!
After I got home, I hurried in the car and drove back to the spot I last saw the extra large sheep. He/She was not there.
I thought to myself, well it is May Day! I will remember this May Day forever!
Later that day, I continued preparing for my May Day event. Of course I could not resist telling the sheep story to my guests. I'm sure poor Kimber, the girl I had working, must have gotten tired of hearing the story, but I couldn't resist.
Later that day into the festivities, one of my regular customers popped in. She overheard me telling about the sheep, and says, "Oh, you must have encountered our neighbors sheep!" I say what? She said she lives on the other side of the busy road, and above her kind of on a plateau, is a sheep farm. She continued to say, it's been there for years, long before they began building homes some twenty years ago. She also confirmed my story on how extremely large the sheep was. She said they were a certain breed that was very large.
I was so happy to hear this story, and to know where the lost sheep belonged.
May Day was fabulous!
Kimber and I had never met. I recruited her from the Vintage Market. I'm so happy she was here to help. She did a beautiful job, and I enjoyed her company. I will post pictures, and highlights about the day later. It will be a little difficult though to beat the Sheep Tale.
Enjoy caring and sharing spring days.
Happily,
