I finished it! The prairie quilt fits perfect on our vintage iron bed, perfect! This is the first quilt I've quilted myself. I must confess, not that difficult and fun to do.
I had to get more batting and thought while picking it up at the local craft store I'd ask some of the quilting ladies some questions I had about quilting your own. Turns out, none of them had ever done it! This is quite interesting to me.
I found that the quilting part was my favorite part of making a quilt!
If you're considering machine quilting yourself I say go for it!
A few things I learned during the process.
The tutorials I shared a couple of posts ago are quite helpful before beginning. Not sure things would have ran so smoothly without them.
After watching one of the tutorials I decided to use fabric adhesive over pinning the top and batting together. One word, HOOKED! Spraying the layers with adhesive spray saved so much time. My prairie quilt was fairly large so I had a lot of spraying to do, but after saying that did not use an entire can, maybe half. By the way, I think the hardest part of quilting is putting all the pieces together. The ripple and rumble seemed to happen easily. No biggy though because the spray adhesive was quite forgiving. If the fabric wasn't smooth it was easy to get it right.
When I placed the large piece in my machine and began quilting all of the three layers stayed in place. Loved that! No removing pins, just rolled up the quilt as I quilted it.
I made my own binding. The tutorial I mentioned will assist you in that process. So easy...
An important tool that I believe is the trick to quilting, the quilters foot. This handy tool allows you to have complete control over your stitches. I used the "Stipple stitch" to make the prairie quilt. So much fun!
The entire process of placing the three layers, quilting and binding took me an afternoon to complete! I could not wait to place the new coverlet on the vintage bed!
I think I'm hooked on machine quilting!
Enjoy caring and sharing prairie quilt summer days.
Warmly,
